Navigating the complexities of family law can be profoundly challenging for anyone, but men often express unique concerns regarding their rights and roles in divorce, child custody, and support proceedings. In Oregon, as in other states, family law is designed to be gender-neutral, yet the perception and practical experiences can vary significantly. Recognizing a perceived need for specialized advocacy, Goldberg Jones – Divorce for Men was established with the specific aim of representing husbands and fathers in family law matters. Opened in Portland in 1997, after a successful launch in Seattle, the firm positions itself as a dedicated resource for men seeking to protect their rights and interests during difficult family transitions.
Goldberg Jones focuses exclusively on family law as it pertains to men, including divorce, child custody, child support, and paternity. Their stated mission is to provide an energetic, knowledgeable, and aggressive defense of men's rights under Oregon law. They aim to address the unique challenges men often face in family court, striving to ensure their voices are heard and their contributions to the family are fairly recognized. The firm emphasizes direct client contact, accessibility, and responsiveness, with managing attorneys often engaging directly with prospective clients to assess cases and provide initial guidance. However, it is important for prospective clients to be aware of the varied experiences of past clients, as highlighted in public reviews, which detail concerns about communication, perceived lack of advocacy, and ultimately, unmet expectations. While the firm's intention is to be a champion for men's rights in family law, personal testimonials underline the importance of thorough due diligence when selecting legal representation in such sensitive areas.

Working with John Alarcon on my custody case was a complete disaster. While he technically communicated, he never explained what was actually going on, never clarified what was expected of me, and constantly left me confused and unprepared. His incompetence isn’t just frustrating—it’s dangerous when the outcome of your case impacts your child and your future. He repeatedly pushed me toward one-sided settlements that heavily favored the other party, showing no real advocacy on my behalf. Key evidence was ignored or outright dismissed, and despite racking up over $12,000 in legal fees, absolutely nothing was resolved in my case. Even worse, there were several indications that he may be under the influence of substances during temporary hearings—something that aligns disturbingly well with his erratic behavior and total lack of professionalism. This wasn’t just a bad experience—it was financially and emotionally devastating. I had to hire a new attorney to clean up the mess he left behind, which added more cost and stress to an already unbearable situation. If you look at other reviews, you’ll see I’m not alone. There’s a clear pattern here—this is not a one-off mistake. John Alarcon is completely unqualified to handle legal matters of any kind, especially something as sensitive as family law. And to the firm: don’t bother responding with excuses. This is not about miscommunication or “unmet expectations.” It’s about sheer incompetence, plain and simple. Do better—for your clients, and for the people whose lives are at stake. Men are trusting you to protect them and instead you rack their bills and leave them out to dry, while their ex's are already trying to do the same. Response to the owner: I stand by my review as a reflection of my personal experience with Mr. Alarcon and the challenges I faced during a sensitive legal matter. I described behaviors I directly witnessed, including unprofessional conduct, delayed filings, verbal aggression toward my family, and erratic behavior that I found concerning. These statements are my personal perceptions and experiences, which are protected by law — as are the experiences of others who have left similar reviews. I understand that as a business, Goldberg Jones may disagree with my account, but trying to label my honest review as defamation is not only legally inaccurate but seems to be an attempt to silence feedback from clients. I believe in sharing my truth to help others make informed decisions, and I hope that my review serves as a cautionary tale for future clients. Based on my experience, I do not recommend Goldberg Jones. Their "family law for men" approach appears to be more of a marketing gimmick than a genuine commitment to their clients. If you're looking for competent legal representation, I suggest looking elsewhere.
I hired John Alarcon to represent me, and honestly, I’ve never worked with a more incompetent attorney. I spent around $11,000 and received little to no communication from him. He never took the time to explain the details of my case or work with me on it. At our first hearing, he promised we’d fight, but when the time came, I had to take the initiative by bringing in witnesses. John ended up folding and convinced me that giving the other side exactly what they wanted would be the best approach. In the end, after all the money I spent, the result was only a $400 biweekly, 2-hour supervised visitation with my kids and a drug test. I consulted with several other attorneys, and they all agreed that John was not worth what I paid. After three consultations, I found a new lawyer. I strongly recommend avoiding John Alarcon.
I had phone calls with several different firms before choosing to move forward with John Alarcon as my divorce attorney. John communicated clearly through the process and set expectations as far as options, timelines and next steps. Situations where you need to hire a family law attorney are emotional and stressful, there really is no winning for either side. John helped us get to a resolution that I was comfortable with and was able to finalize the divorce as quickly as possible. John was responsive, organized and clear throughout the process and answered any concerns or questions I had. Overall, I was happy with the results and glad I had John on my side.
Getting divorced was really tough, but hiring John Alarcon at Goldberg and Jones made it so much easier. From the start, he knew exactly what he was doing in a proccess I knew nothing about. With his guidance and kind instructions He helped me get above and beyond what i was asking for . What meant the most was how much he cared. He always answered my calls, explained things in a way I could actually understand, and never made me feel like just another case. Thanks to John and his team at Goldberg and Jones, I’m in a much better place now. I’d definitely tell anyone dealing with a divorce to call him — he’s the real deal.
I hired Billy Prince to represent me in my divorce. Billy is an amazing attorney! He helped me navigate one of the most difficult times of my life. He was very responsive and knew the law! He got me a great deal! Then when my ex got remarried he immediately got my spousal support obligation reduced to zero! I highly recommend hiring Goldberg & Jones and Billy Prince!
